Ugli Fruit
Yes, there is a fruit called ugly (but spelt ‘ugli’), whose name is derived
from the unsightly appearance of its rough, wrinkled, greenish-yellow skin
that is loosely wrapped around the orange pulpy citrus inside. Ugli fruit is
a Jamaican tangelo naturally created by hybridizing a grapefruit, an orange
and a tangerine! It is usually slightly larger than a grapefruit and the
flesh is very juicy with a taste that tends towards the sweet of the
tangerine rather than the bitter of the grapefruit. It’s unique taste is
generally described as more sour than an orange and less bitter than a
tangerine! Fortunately, ugli fruit has another kinder name – the exotic
tangelo.
