Quince

A rather nostalgic fruit for South Africans – quinces were planted by Jan van Riebeeck’s gardeners in the Company Gardens in Cape Town and have been grown on farms in the Cape ever since. The quince belongs to the pome fruit family, together with apples and pears. It has the appearance of a large, knobbly, yellow apple but because of its tart flavour is seldom eaten raw but used rather in preserves and baking. The quince may be best known by an older generation, but like so many comfort foods from yesteryear, it finds a place on the menus of today’s foodies!

Serving Size

½ a medium quince provides 1 serve of fruit.

Seasonal Availability

Quinces are available from early February to the end of June.
