Strawberries
Preparation & Serving
Due to their perishable nature, only prepare strawberries just before eating them or using them in a recipe. Gently wash the berries under cold running water and pat dry. Use a small paring knife to remove the caps. Don’t soak strawberries in water as absorbing excess water can affect their taste and texture.
Serving ideas:
- Slice some fresh strawberries over your muesli and yoghurt for a deliciously healthy breakfast.
- Strawberries can be the perfect complement to savoury snacks. Drizzle a little balsamic vinegar or grind fresh black pepper over them to bring out their delicious flavour, and serve with cream cheese and crackers, ostrich carpaccio or camembert baked in phyllo pastry.
- Add colour and taste to your salads - try a strawberry, smoked chicken, avocado and sliced almond salad.
- Make a sensational salsa using chopped strawberries, spring onions, cucumber and mint dressed with balsamic vinegar, salt and black pepper. Serve with tortilla chips and cream cheese, cheese platter or with steak.
- Why not try an unusual strawberry and orange soup as a refreshing summer starter.
- Cleanse the palate between courses with a scoop of strawberry sorbet.
- You can drink your strawberries too! Create a healthy strawberry smoothie, or give the kids a treat of a real strawberry milkshake. Serve your guests jugs of festive strawberry sangria.
- Thread strawberries on kebab skewers, sprinkle lightly with icing sugar and braai until they just begin to brown. Serve with ice cream and berry liqueur.
- Strawberries are the ultimate dessert, whether served whole and dipped in chocolate, soaked in berry liqueur and served with ice cream, or layered with fruit, crumbled meringue and yoghurt in a cocktail glass as a gorgeous parfait.
