Strawberries
Selection & Storage
Choose shiny, plump and firm strawberries with a bright red colour and avoid those with white or green around the top, a sign they were picked before fully ripe. A fresh, bright green cap should be attached. Check the bottom of the punnet for mould or moisture from overripe, mushy fruit. Ripe berries should have a fragrant smell. Smaller berries are usually tastier than large berries but new varieties can be large, sweet and very tasty.
Keep berries covered, refrigerated and dry - don’t wash until you are ready to eat them. Strawberries are best eaten as soon as possible as they spoil quickly. Strawberries can also be frozen whole, cut or crushed/pureed. Remember to serve whole/cut strawberries partially frozen as fully thawed strawberries become mushy.
