Kumquat
Kumquats are oval, miniature orange citrus fruit with edible, sweet, thin
skin and tart flesh. The entire fruit is edible, including the skin and the
seeds.
The name kumquat is Cantonese for "golden orange" – a fitting
description of these little gems that add a burst of colour to the grey
winter months.
Although many kumquat trees are grown for their
sweet, edible fruits, they are also used as ornamental plants because of
their attractive, shiny leaves and delicate white flowers that bloom in the
summer.
Thought to have originated in China, researchers have tracked
this centuries-old fruit to Japan and China where it has been cultivated for
a very long time.
It was once customary in China to have a small,
potted kumquat plant on the table during meals so that diners could nibble
on the fruit between courses.
