Kiwi
This egg-shaped fruit with a fuzzy brown skin encasing bright green flesh has a past as exotic as its appearance. Native to the Yang-tse river valley in China, kiwifruit were originally called yáng táo (sunny peach). They were brought to New Zealand in the early 20th century by missionaries and were renamed ‘Chinese Gooseberries’. They were later exported to America where they were finally renamed ‘Kiwifruit’ in honour of New Zealand’s national bird, the ‘kiwi’. Bursting with vitamin C and valuable phytochemicals, kiwifruit are a great addition to your 5-a-Day!
