Honeydew Melon
Preparation & Serving
Although the rind of the melon will be discarded, it is recommended that you wash the melon in warm soapy water before cutting it so that any impurities on the rind will not be carried by the knife onto the flesh. After drying, use a knife with a long blade to carefully cut the melon in half. Scoop out the seeds and strings with a spoon and discard. Scoop out balls of melon using a melon baller or cut into wedges or cubes, removing the rind as you go. Melon is best served at room temperature, and a squirt of lemon or lime juice can help to enhance their flavour.
Serving ideas:
- Create a fruit salad using cubes of honeydew melon and whatever fruit you have available. Top with yoghurt and a handful of muesli for a delicious summer breakfast.
- Blend chunks of honeydew melon with ice, a dash of lemon or lime juice and a little honey. This makes a refreshing smoothie and can also be poured into moulds and frozen to create ice lollies or sorbet!
- Add melon wedges or cubes to a green salad coupled with halloumi cheese for a tasty sweet-and-salty combination. Melon is also a fun addition to a tuna salad!
- Be adventurous and serve your guests as chilled melon soup using half a honeydew melon as a bowl. This is the perfect starter for a hot summer’s night.
- For a scrumptious appetiser, wrap small wedges of melon with prosciutto and secure with a toothpick.
- Create a fruity melon salsa by chopping your melon, red onion, red pepper and coriander finely and mixing with lime juice, salt and a dash of chilli flakes. Serve with chicken, fish or steak.
- Thread cubes of melon and other fruit onto skewers and serve, with a yoghurt dip, as an appetiser or dessert. Use fruit that provide a gorgeous variety of colours.
- Using a large slice of peeled honeydew melon as a base, pile berries and sliced fruit on the melon and top with yoghurt, ice-cream or frozen yoghurt. Sprinkle with chopped nuts and add a cherry on top for a delicious dessert.
- Wedges, cubes or balls of honeydew melon are a great snack on their own – light, refreshing and sweet!
