Dates
Preparation & Serving
Dates are great on their own as a snack, but are also used extensively in baking, puddings and savoury dishes.

Serving ideas:
  • Dates are wonderful in fruit compotes, which can be served with muesli and yoghurt for breakfast.
  • Mix dates and nuts for home made trail mix.
  • Chop dates roughly and sprinkle over salads such as coleslaw, lentil salad and curried pasta salad with peppers.
  • Put a few whole, pitted dates in your kids’ lunchboxes for a sweet, healthy treat that counts towards their 5-a-Day.
  • Add chopped dates to savoury meat dishes such as lamb bredie, tagines and curries.
  • Turn simple side dishes like barley, cooked bulgur, rice or couscous into exotic cuisine by adding chopped or slivered dates.
  • Stuff pitted dates with fillings such as almonds, candied lemon or orange peel, marzipan, tahini or cream cheese and serve as a sweet treat.
  • Try dipping fresh dates in chocolate or adding them to your chocolate fondue table.
  • Due to their natural sugars, dates are great for desserts and baking such as deliciously fruity breads and muffins such as date and nut, bran, date and carrot or date and pumpkin.
