Apple
Apples are one of the most loved and versatile fruits in the world. They
are classified as a pome - a fruit that has many tiny seeds within a core at
the centre. Today, the science of apple growing is known as pomology.
The health benefits of apples have been recorded since medieval times, which
gave rise to the modern day variation of the old English saying "An apple a
day keeps the doctor away." In Greek and Roman mythology, apples are symbols
of love and beauty. An ancient Greek who wanted to propose to a woman would
only have to toss her an apple. If she caught it, he knew she had accepted
his offer.
There are currently thousands of varieties of apples grown across the
world – each with its own unique taste and colouring.

Seasonal Availability
Different varieties of apples are available at different
times of the year (see the chart below), but considering all
varieties, apples are available all year round.

Braeburn
This variety is red-flushed with a greenish-gold background colour. They have a firm texture, juicy flesh and a sweet, tart flavour. They make excellent fresh eating apples and are great for dicing and adding to salads.
Fuji
Fuji apples are firm and crisp with cream-coloured flesh. The flesh is juicy and has a delicate aroma. They are small to medium in size, with a dull red-pink blush and a yellow, orange background colour. These apples are excellent fresh eating apples. Cooking tends to cause the flesh to disintegrate.
Golden Delicious
While these apples are green when they are harvested, they turn golden yellow during ripening. Their skin can develop a delicate pink blush, depending on the climate. They are medium-sized with creamy, juicy flesh and a sweet flavour. The flesh retains its shape when cooked, so these apples can be enjoyed fresh or cooked.
Granny Smith
These apples have a bright green skin, but they can have a red or pinkish blush in cooler areas. Medium to large in size, the flesh is white and crisp with a tart taste. Granny Smith apples are excellent for eating and cooking.
Jonagold
This apple is a cross between two varieties – the Jonathan and the Golden Delicious. They have a golden skin, which is striped with a red blush. These are large eating apples with juicy, spicy flesh. Enjoy Jonagold apples on their own or in fresh salads or served with cheese.
Pink Lady and Cripp’s Pink
These apples have a prominent pink blush on a lime green to cream background. They are medium in size and have a crisp crunch and smooth texture. Their flesh is a creamy colour and they have a sweet-tart flavour. If the apple has an unbroken bright pink colour that covers 40% of the fruit, it is packed as a Pink Lady. If this colour standard is not met, it is packed as a Cripp's Pink. Since this variety resists browning when cut, it is ideal for use in salad, fresh eating, baking and served with cheese.
Royal Gala
Royal gala apples have a green-yellow skin with bright red stripes. They are medium in size with a crisp texture and a fragrant, sweet flavour. They make excellent fresh eating apples, especially in salads.
Starking
These medium-sized apples have a green-yellow background with red stripes. The flesh is cream-coloured and a crisp texture, making them excellent fresh eating apples. The flesh disintegrates when cooked.
Top Red
This variety has a deep red colour that is more uniform than Starking. Top Reds are medium-sized apples with cream-white flesh, a crisp texture and a sweet and juicy flavour. They make excellent fresh eating apples.
Sundowner or Cripp’s Red
Sundowner or Cripp’s Red apples are medium-sized and have a uniform round conical shape. Their coarse texture, juicy flesh and high sugar content give it a delicious fresh flavour. These apples have a striking red blush colour that predominates over a green-yellow background.
