Top Tips
Sophie’s Tips |
Invite your children to choose and prepare a new recipe using fruit or vegetable they aren’t familiar with. It’s a fun way to expose them to new textures and flavours and to teach them practical cooking skills!
Teach your kids fun facts about the health benefits of vegetables and
fruit e.g. “Carrots help you see in the dark!”
| Children learn from our eating habits, so create a culture of healthy
snacking in your family by choosing grapes, strawberries or an apple
when watching a movie, or reading a book in the garden.
| Cut veggies and fruit into exciting shapes for your kids so that they are fun to look at and eat. Circles, squares, stars or moons – the sky is the limit!
| When throwing kids’ parties, provide platters of fresh fruit and veggies cut into fun shapes on the party table. If kids are seated at various tables, create colourful mini platters to be placed on each table. Hold a little competition where the table that finishes their plate of veggies and fruit first gets secret goodies! Kids love surprises so it’s sure to be a hit! |
| Growing veggies and fruit is a great way to get kids excited about fresh food, and it’s easier than you think! Even those with limited space can grow veggies in pots, hanging baskets or tyres. What could be better than being able to pick and eat your 5-a-Day straight from your own garden? |
A message from our patron, Sophie Ndaba
"5-a-Day strives to promote good health and this is essential for all South Africans. If my continued support can help ensure that as many people out there eat plenty of vegetables and fruit I will be satisfied. With a simple commitment to good health and maybe a small vegetable or fruit garden in everyone's homes, we will be well on our way!"
Sophie Ndaba, better known as Queen Moroka on the popular soapie Generations, is one of South Africa’s favourite personalities and is part of the lives of millions. Having conquered the catwalk, won the best actress awards at You magazine's You Spectacular in 2008 and the best comic awards at the Golden Horn awards this year, Sophie is embracing a new and important challenge by officially becoming a patron of the 5-a-Day for Better Health Trust.
